Website accessibility compliance in Portage la Prairie
Remote WCAG 2.1 AA audits and repairs for Portage la Prairie agriculture, food, transport and retail organizations under Man. Reg. 47/2022.
Portage la Prairie is a commercial centre for Manitoba's Central Plains, located on the Trans-Canada Highway and two major rail lines west of Winnipeg. Agriculture and related processing and services have long been central to its economy, and food manufacturing has grown alongside them. The city's industrial parks include the Southport Aerospace Centre on the site of a former Canadian Forces base.
Since May 1, 2025, organizations with one or more employees in Manitoba have been covered by the Accessible Information and Communication Standard Regulation, Man. Reg. 47/2022 (s. 2(c) (opens in a new tab)). Web content published on or after that date, or needed to access an organization's goods or services, must meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA (s. 7(1) (opens in a new tab)). We work with Portage la Prairie organizations remotely.
Which organizations in Portage la Prairie are covered
Any organization with one or more employees in Manitoba. That includes farm suppliers and equipment dealers, food processors, trucking and logistics firms, retailers, clinics, restaurants and community organizations. Large employers must also document their accessibility measures and policies (s. 3(2) (opens in a new tab)) and a training policy (s. 4(4) (opens in a new tab)).
Websites we see most often in Portage la Prairie
The issues below are common patterns on websites in the city's main sectors. They are not findings about any particular organization.
Agriculture suppliers and equipment dealers
Price lists, parts catalogues and agronomy bulletins are often posted as scanned PDFs that a screen reader cannot read. Equipment listings rely on image carousels with no alternative text (1.1.1) and filters that need a mouse (2.1.1). See retail and trades and contractors.
Food processors and manufacturers
Product labels and product information are an exception under s. 7(2) (opens in a new tab). Careers pages, supplier portals and contact forms are not. Online job applications that time out without warning (2.2.1) or flag errors only in red (3.3.1) are common. See professional services.
Transportation and logistics
Highway and rail access make trucking and logistics part of the local economy. Driver application forms, shipment tracking widgets and quote requests often have unlabelled fields (1.3.1) and custom controls with no accessible name or state (4.1.2).
Retail, restaurants and services
As a shopping centre for the surrounding region, Portage has many retail and restaurant websites. Image-only menus and flyers (1.1.1), low-contrast hours and prices (1.4.3) and pages that scroll sideways on a phone at 320 CSS px (1.4.10) come up often. See restaurants, clinics and healthcare and non-profits.
